Last week was my favorite lesson/activity in SKID. It was Ice Cream Day! You may be wondering what ice cream has to do with SKID....a lot!! Our topic was on communication. In years past, we made teams of 2 and gave one person part of the directions and gave the other person the other half of the directions and they had to communicate with each other to make the ice cream. Last year we did more of a Q&A and after each right answer they got one more step or ingredient. This year, we wrote the directions on a blank puzzle, broke it up, and each person had to put their puzzle back together and had to relay to the leaders the directions to make their ice cream. Maybe in another session we may combine a few of these methods. I am open to more ideas, too.
So here it is...our great recipe for ice cream.
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup whipping cream (or heavy cream)
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract or flavoring
1/2 to 3/4 cup rock salt
2 cups ice
1 qt ziploc bag
1 gallon ziploc bag
1. Mix milk, whipping cream, sugar, and vanilla in quart size bag.
2. Squeeze all air out of bag and seal securely
3. Place 2 cups of ice and salt into gallon size bag.
4. Place smaller bag into larger bag.
5. With gloves, or towels to hold each end, shake vigorously until the contents in the qt bag solidifies into ice cream.
6. Carefully remove smaller bag and dip into bowl with clean water and some ice to rinse salt off.
7. Cut off one corner of qt bag and squeeze out into bowl/cup.
8. ENJOY!
Optional: Add chocolate syrup, caramel, sprinkles, or any other add-in you like with your ice cream!
We do this with 8-12 year olds and they LOVE it!! It would be a great idea for a birthday party.
And remember...it's never too cold to make ice cream :)
